Fireside chat with Matt Buder Shapiro, CMO of Vytalize Health

Who is Matt Buder Shapiro?

I am the Chief Marketing Officer of Vytalize Health, a new kind of  Accountable Care Organization powering primary care practices with bold financial incentives and smart technology. Vytalize helps over 600 providers and manages more than $1 billion in medical spending. Previously, I was the Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of MedPilot, which Vytalize Health acquired after we helped navigate over one million patients through their healthcare experience.

I am also the co-chair of OhioX’s public policy committee and a technology policy advisor to Cleveland mayoral candidate Justin Bibb.

Tell us more about your role in Vytalize Health?

I’ve had the incredible opportunity to build Vytalize Health’s brand. Our primary mission is to “accelerate the world’s transition to value-based care by taking care of the doctors who take care of us.” We firmly believe our mission will create a better world for both doctors and patients. The best part of my job is working alongside so many inspiring people.

What is the most difficult part of your job? But the most rewarding one?

Healthcare is a very challenging industry due to the complexity, fragmentation, and misaligned incentives. Thankfully, our goal of helping doctors provide better care to patients at a more affordable cost couldn’t be more rewarding. We’re motivated every day to accelerate the transition to a system that incentivizes better care over volume. The core of our marketing strategy focuses on educating the public on the strengths of value-based healthcare and how accountable care organizations are a significant piece of the puzzle.

Is there anything that you would change about your professional path?

I wouldn’t change anything. Partly due to my personality, I think everything happens for a reason, and you need to make the most of any opportunity. Both positive and negative experiences are critical to everyone’s development. I’m fortunate to have so much support from mentors throughout my career, including Jon Pinney, Mark Skidmore, and Dr. Tom Lee.

Please name a few technologies which have the greatest impact on your business.

One of the critical reasons Vytalize is successful is our ability to select industry-leading partners. We created the Vytalize Innovation Lab to create strategic partnerships and attract and deploy leading digital health solutions in a value-based environment. Companies like Stellar Health, Carrot Health, and RubinconMD are a few of the many valuable partners that help bolster our offerings to healthcare providers and patients. We’re always looking to meet new companies trying to improve healthcare so don’t be shy!

What books do you have on your nightstand?

My favorite books are all nonfiction and focused on politics, business, and psychology. I will, however, come clean that my nightstand is empty since my favorite way to consume literature is through audiobooks so I can feed my insatiable appetite to walk. My favorite recent books include The Biggest Bluff, When Lions Roar, and Powerhouse. As an entrepreneur, I find it essential to constantly learn from others what’s worked and what hasn’t. Reading books on business also truly helps me humanize the challenging experience of building a company.

Because of the current economic climate our publication has started a series of discussions with professional individuals meant to engage our readers with relevant companies and their representatives in order to discuss their involvement, what challenges they have had in the past and what they are looking forward to in the future. This sequence aims to present a series of experiences, recent developments, changes and downsides in terms of their business areas, as well as their goals, values, career history, the high-impact success outcomes and achievements.
