Fireside chat with Keith Selvin, Founder K LABS NYC

Who is Keith Selvin?

I love creating new things. I learned how to code because I had a lot of ideas and no way to make them come to life. I’ve helped build products and companies from scratch since. I learn a lot by googling and am ok with absolutely sucking at something for a long time before I get good at it.

What’s the story behind K LABS NYC?

Any person I even slightly knew would come to me with their ideas for apps, companies, new products etc. I started doing some freelance consulting on the side that eventually turned into K LABS. We now work with all kinds of clients from successful CEOs to first-time founders.

What was the most difficult part of your experience in the early beginnings?

A lot of clients want a fixed price for project completion. It’s really hard to figure out the price for a project that might take months. We do everything we can to mitigate the risk such as in-depth wireframing and completely designing the agreed upon features before we start developing.

What are you most proud of regarding your business?

I am really proud that people actually trust us, and that when people think of their quit-their-day-job worthy ideas they might come to me to make it happen.

What is your vision for the future of K LABS NYC?

I want K LABS to become an incubator. It would be awesome to not only provide everything someone needs to turn an idea into a product, but also be able to connect awesome founders who don’t always have the capital to the funding needed.

What’s your advice for the businesses that are trying to adapt to this economic climate?

Especially in this current economic climate, it’s really important for business owners to leverage their resources strategically. It is undeniable that a strong virtual presence, whether website or app, is essential to persisting in the new virtual environment. My goal has always been the same; to give every business an amazing and efficient online presence.

Please name a few technologies which have the greatest impact on your business.

In terms of what technology has the biggest impact on the projects we work on, Apple is king. Whatever new features they build into the latest iPhones often end up having a pretty big impact on the direction of future projects.

What books do you have on your nightstand?

The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holliday. My best friend got me this book.  You read 1 page a day — great lessons that have helped me stay calm when it feels like everything is on fire and crashing on my head.

Because of the current economic climate our publication has started a series of discussions with professional individuals meant to engage our readers with relevant companies and their representatives in order to discuss their involvement, what challenges they have had in the past and what they are looking forward to in the future. This sequence aims to present a series of experiences, recent developments, changes and downsides in terms of their business areas, as well as their goals, values, career history, the high-impact success outcomes and achievements.
